A Passion for Life

I am a biomedical engineer by profession and highly passionate about designing and developing biomedical implants and medical devices. In addition to working fulltime for an orthopedics medical device company in Wayne, Pa. I serve as a volunteer research scientist in neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Few years ago I was identified with a debilitating progressive neurodegenerative condition that presently appears to be unique to me. This condition has prominently claimed my ability to coherently articulate speech. In order to continue to function effectively as a professional as well as lead an active social life, I use a wide variety of tools techniques to augment my communicative abilities; ranging from basic American Sign Language, to plain old low tech paper & pen, to a computerized AAC device; a Dell Axim51V Pocket PC running Gus Communicator Software. I also have a device from GM Mobility installed in my truck that enables 2-way TTY/TTDY communication with GM’s OnStar Navigation and Emergency Response Advisors. In my spare time I am working on putting together a communication device that would enable Airplane Pilots with significant speech disabilities to communicate with ATC.

Advances in technology, combined with the indomitable Human Spirit to persevere, innovate and overcome are making it increasingly possible to enable and empower individuals with disabilities. Becoming a member of the AAC Writers’ Brigade gives me a platform to contribute and share my unique perspective that as a biomedical engineer on the cutting edge of science and a user of assistive technology.

I do not believe in limits and continue to be incredibly passionate about Life, actively participating in sporting events such as the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival and the Philadelphia Rothman 8K Race. I live with my wife and four year old daughter in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
