T3: Continuing Education through Traditional and Internet Applications

Lead Institutions:

Duke University, Pennsylvania State University,
Temple University, State University of New York at Buffalo,
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

PURPOSE
The objective of this initiative was to develop an ongoing continuing education program for all AAC stakeholders and to expand the reach through Internet applications.
TARGET POPULATION
Researchers, practitioners, and consumers
PROBLEM
The field of AAC is continuously developing. While researchers, practitioners, and consumers may have the basic skills in AAC, it is imperative that effective continuing education training methods be employed to keep these individuals current in the areas of knowledge and skill.
PROGRESS

AAC-RERC partners regularly attend conferences by and for consumers (such as PEC and RESNA) and present and dialog with consumers, family members, and care providers. The AAC-RERC also sponsors content in Alternatively Speaking and Augmentative Communication News. Additionally, the AAC-RERC disseminates information through ACOLUG, the largest listserv for people who rely on AAC technologies.

The AAC-RERC has actively worked with its partners to provide an increasing number of its continuing education opportunities to consumers as well as other stakeholders. The partner's websites host slide presentations and course materials; and online conferencing has taken place on several projects allowing greater inclusion of underrepresented, rural, and disabled consumers. The AAC-RERC has partnered with Kornreich Center in New York to host monthly live webcasts for stakeholders. These are conducted by individuals directly associated with the AAC-RERC and continuing education units (CEUs) will be offered for participation in 2003.
