AAC-RERC Dissemination, Utilization & Technical Assistance Project 1
www.aac-rerc.com

Establishment of an Internet/Web Site for Interactive Communication and Information Dissemination

Lead Institution: Duke University
PURPOSE
To establish an accessible and dynamic Internet/Web site for interactive communication and information dissemination for the AAC-RERC and the AAC community at large.
TARGET POPULATION
Entire AAC community
PROBLEM
Historically, RERCs have been a single, physical entity. Some have viewed these as centralized, regionalized, autocratic, and having limited resources to efficiently communicate and disseminate information. The AAC-RERC is a multi-site "virtual RERC" that collaborates with a number of state-of-the-art locations around the country that already have impressive research efforts underway with the AAC community at large. The multiple sites need to interact seamlessly and effectively, while maintaining a low cost and easy accessibility. Each of the AAC-RERC partner sites already have the costly, physical internet/communication infrastructure already in place. We believe that it is the responsibility of the AAC-RERC to communicate and disseminate information efficiently and in a timely manner to the entire AAC community. The foundation of the virtual RERC is the Internet/World Wide Web.
PROGRESS

The URL for the AAC-RERC's website is www.aac-rerc.com. Our website serves as the portal to our partner's websites, is W3C Level 3 accessible, and is comprised of the following main components:

  • Mission - Contains our mission statement, the NIDRR objective, research assumptions, our R&D emphasis, and the virtual center approach.
  • Research Activities - Describes the purpose, TARGET POPULATION, problem, progress, key findings, and contacts for each of the AAC-RERC's research, development, training, and dissemination projects.
  • News & Highlights - Contains event information that is relevant to the AAC field and AAC-related white papers.
  • AAC Links - Comprised of links to the RERC partners, assistive technology manufacturers, related research programs, user information, government and regulatory information, publishers, professional organizations, and Internet and web accessibility web sites.
  • Contact Us - Contains email links to each of the partners.
In addition to the website, the AAC-RERC has partnered with the Kornreich Center in New York and is now hosting monthly live webcasts for stakeholders. These are conducted by individuals directly associated with the AAC-RERC and in 2003, continuing education units (CEUs) will be offered for participation.
